This article is a follow-up to our recent exploration of The Three I’s approach in dementia care at Livewell Bryanston. In our first article, we discussed the importance of Impairment and how understanding each resident’s unique cognitive and physical needs forms the foundation of personalised care. By tailoring support to individual requirements, we create an environment that fosters confidence and engagement for all residents. You can read more about that approach here.

In this second article, we delve into Inclusion – the second pillar of our model. At Livewell Bryanston, fostering connection and belonging is at the heart of our community. Through community engagement, family involvement, and thoughtfully designed dementia-friendly spaces, we ensure each resident feels valued and integrated in a supportive, vibrant community. Here’s a closer look at how we promote social inclusion and make each day meaningful for our residents.

Community Engagement

At Livewell, social interaction is at the heart of our approach. Our occupational therapy team carefully assesses each resident’s interests, preferences, and personality, facilitating seating arrangements during activities and meals that encourage natural connections. By grouping residents thoughtfully and observing their interactions, we’re able to foster genuine friendships that enhance their sense of belonging. This tailored approach helps ensure that each resident has the opportunity to build meaningful connections with others.

One activity that has significantly contributed to social inclusion is our Scrabble Club. Regular participants come together daily to enjoy friendly competition and mental stimulation. This activity has not only brought residents closer but has also provided a fulfilling routine that strengthens their overall well-being. Playing Scrabble offers a host of cognitive and social benefits for people living with dementia. Engaging in a game that requires word recall and strategic thinking helps to stimulate memory, language skills, and problem-solving abilities, which are crucial for maintaining mental sharpness.

For our residents facing physical or cognitive challenges, we offer inclusive activities like wheelchair-friendly ball games. Not only do inclusive activities provide enjoyment and engagement but are essential for creating a sense of belonging and accessibility for all residents, regardless of physical or cognitive challenges. These activities promote physical movement, hand-eye coordination, and social interaction, which are beneficial for both mental and emotional well-being. By ensuring everyone can participate, Livewell Bryanston fosters an environment where each resident feels valued and connected, reducing isolation and supporting their quality of life.

Family Involvement

Recognising the critical role families play, Livewell invites family members to join their loved ones for meals and special celebrations, such as Easter, Mother’s Day, and Heritage Day. These gatherings foster an inclusive, supportive atmosphere that reinforces family bonds and provides a sense of continuity for residents, contributing to a collaborative and supportive care environment.

Beyond physical presence, our team provides emotional support to family members who may struggle with a loved one’s dementia diagnosis. Occupational therapy staff and management offer guidance and, when necessary, referrals to experienced therapists to ensure family members have the support they need. This dedication to family support often leads to positive outcomes for residents. For example, one family member initiated a knitting class for residents, creating a space for purpose-driven social interaction that has become a cherished and therapeutic activity for those involved.

Dementia-Friendly Spaces

Livewell Bryanston is thoughtfully designed to provide residents with security, comfort, and ease of navigation, supporting a sense of independence and inclusion. Our secure garden area, for example, allows families and residents to spend quality time together, with discrete security features that create a safe yet accessible environment.

Our facility has recently expanded with new suites tailored to dementia-friendly design. These suites are arranged in clusters with wide passages and direct access to the activity centre, enabling residents to navigate comfortably and confidently. By minimising large, confusing areas and creating familiar, easily accessible pathways, we provide a reassuring environment that promotes both physical and emotional well-being.

Feedback from families has been overwhelmingly positive, with many expressing appreciation for the impact that these thoughtfully designed spaces have on their loved one’s quality of life. The sense of confidence residents gain from a well-structured environment allows them to navigate more freely, contributing to their sense of independence and belonging.

In fostering connection and belonging, Livewell Bryanston remains dedicated to creating a community where residents and their families feel supported, valued, and included at every stage.
