“We know the people that we are working with so we understand them very well. We know what they like.”

Mercy Tokoyo, Cook,

Kitchen Team Leader

I work in the kitchen, I am the team leader. There is a head chef and I am second in charge.

With one of the residents, everyday we check with her what she’d like to eat. Her lunch and supper changes everyday. If a resident gets something that they don’t like, most of the time they won’t eat. So we are careful with that and we make sure we can accommodate everyone and they get what they want. Many residents don’t eat what is on the menu, so they have their own menu.

We know the people that we are working with so we understand them very well. We know what they like. Because they are elderly, we make sure the food is soft and is cooked properly and served in a very nice way, so that when they see it, they like it. We make sure it is tasty.

What I love about my job is it teaches me to have love, to love each other and to have love for elderly people. It has taught me to handle difficult situations. Sometimes when new residents arrive, getting to know them and what they want takes time. But we adapt quickly.
