Nutrition and Brain Health: Optimizing Good Nutrition Throughout the Years

Speaker: Maya du Plessis, Registered Dietitian

Maya graduated from the University of Stellenbosch with a degree in dietetics. She is currently busy with her Master’s in nutrition. Maya’s interests include health promotion, gastro-intestinal issues, chronic diseases of the lifestyle (diabetes, hypertension or hypercholesterolemia) and neurological conditions that can influence appetite and dietary intake. She consults with in-patients at Stellenbosch Mediclinic, out-patients at the practice and does home visits on request.

Topic:
There are various nutrients that are essential for brain health. Neurological conditions are often characterized by symptoms that can impair dietary intake and lead to weight loss and a poorer outcome. Your diet can have a positive or negative impact on the inflammatory response, as well as the management of chronic diseases. We will dissect the current guidelines and research on neurological conditions, as well as chronic diseases of the lifestyle, as these conditions often go hand in hand, and give practical tips on ways to easily improve your diet and thus improve your health.
