With a team of dedicated professionals and a culture of continuous improvement, Livewell Estates Bryanston, sets the standard for excellence in dementia care, constantly pushing boundaries and redefining what it means to support those living with cognitive impairment.

We are incredibly proud and excited to share a pioneering approach to dementia care titled, “The Three I’s”, which was developed by our Joint CEOs of Livewell Bryanston, Sandro Nassi and Quito Esteves.

1. Impairment – Understanding Cognitive Decline

Dementia is characterised by progressive cognitive decline, affecting memory, thinking, behaviour, and the ability to perform daily activities. As caregivers, recognising and respecting impairment is not only essential but forms the first part of our care approach. When understanding cognitive decline, we take multiple considerations into account, including:

Person-Centered Approach
Personalised care lies at the heart of everything we do at Livewell Bryanston. We recognise that each resident is unique, with their own preferences, memories, and life experiences. That’s why we take the time to develop personalised dementia care plans that cater to the individual needs and interests of each resident. We begin by understanding their unique experiences, life history like career, family and hobbies, likes and dislikes, etc. and use this to develop a tailored care plan unique to their specific needs.

Communication
Communication is guided by clarity and patience. We understand that our residents may face challenges in processing information, so we prioritise using clear, simple language to facilitate understanding. Our staff members are trained to communicate with empathy, allowing extra time for responses and ensuring that each resident feels heard and valued.

Safety Measures
Safety measures are integrated seamlessly into our approach, creating an environment that promotes both security and independence. By identifying and minimising potential hazards, we strive to enhance the overall well-being of our residents, fostering a sense of security and peace of mind for both them and their families.

2. Inclusion – Fostering Connection and Belonging

Social inclusion lies at the heart of our approach at Bryanston, where fostering connections and a sense of belonging is crucial to the well-being of our residents. Here are the ways in which we promote inclusion.

Community Enagagement
We believe in promoting social inclusion through various avenues, starting with community engagement initiatives. Encouraging residents to participate in social activities, clubs, and support groups not only fosters meaningful connections with other residents, caregivers and our staff but also enriches their overall quality of life by nurturing a sense of belonging within a larger community.

Family Involvement
We recognise the invaluable role that family members play in the lives of our residents. By actively involving family members in care decisions and providing them with emotional support, we create a collaborative care environment that prioritises the holistic well-being of each individual.

Dementia-Friendly Spaces
Our Bryanston Estate places great emphasis on designing dementia-friendly spaces within our facility. These environments are meticulously crafted to reduce confusion and enhance comfort, providing residents with a sense of security and familiarity. By creating spaces that are conducive to their unique needs and preferences, we ensure that each resident feels valued, respected, and included in every aspect of their daily life.

3. Improvement – Enhancing Quality of Life

Our Joint CEOs, Sandro and Quito, are passionately dedicated to enhancing the quality of life for residents at our Bryanston Estate. They firmly believe that continuous improvement in dementia care is needed to meet our residents’ evolving needs and deliver the highest possible quality of life. Their unwavering commitment drives our pursuit of excellence in care, ensuring that each resident receives personalised attention and support tailored to their unique journey at Livewell Bryanston. This is achieved through the following strategies:

Education and Training
Central to our approach is the commitment to ongoing education and training for our caregivers. By equipping them with comprehensive knowledge about dementia, effective communication techniques, and behaviour management strategies, we ensure that they are well-prepared to provide the highest standard of care.

Research and Innovation
We place a strong emphasis on research and innovation, constantly staying updated on evidence-based practices and exploring new interventions to enhance our care model. By remaining at the forefront of advancements in dementia care, we strive to offer our residents the most effective and innovative treatments available.

Holistic Care
We believe in providing holistic care that addresses the physical, emotional, and social needs of our residents. This comprehensive approach involves optimising nutrition, promoting regular exercise, and providing opportunities for mental stimulation.

In conclusion, dementia care is not just a responsibility but a collective endeavour, requiring the active involvement of healthcare professionals, families, and communities alike. Embracing the principles of the three “I’s” – Impairment, Inclusion, and Improvement – is pivotal in fostering a nurturing and empathetic environment for individuals living with dementia.

“At Livewell Estates, Bryanston, we are committed to a journey of continuous improvement, where every step forward ensures that those affected by dementia receive the dignified and person-centred care they deserve.” – Sandro Nassi and Quito Esteves.
